Educated Reel

The 2011/2012 season for Educated Reel is now complete. Thank you to everyone who came out to the Metro for our film nights. It was a lot of fun!
Here's a recap:
October 27, 2011 - Fright Night
James Cadden's short film Leash, which was made especially for the evening, had the audience gasping and laughing.
Dr. Bill Beard discussed love, costume, actors, gore and the "Canadian-ess" of The Fly. Dr. Beard was very entertaining and generated a lot of questions from the audience. Dr. Bill Beard donated copies of Rue Morgue's issue commemorating The Fly's 35th anniversary this month for our prize draw (we also had Free Night out at the Movie passes to give away). Incidentally, Rue Morgue's (Toronto) editor-in-chief is Dave Alexander ('02 Arts).
November 17, 2011 - Alberta's Lost Histories
We had a good turnout for the club, despite cars sliding sideways on the roads outside. To reward our audiences efforts, we had interesting films on the unique histories of Alberta, stimulating discussion and two tickets to see Michael Ondantjee (and some other goodies) to giveaway.
Trevor Anderson ('95 Arts) screened his short The High Level Bridge and Tom Radford (’66 Arts) showed two of his earlier made-for-TV films: The Great Lone Land and The Last Roundup: The Wilf Carter Story.
These two filmmakers, while both locally and internationally successful, are at different points in their careers and discussed their feelings about promoting film internationally, how they became filmmakers, the collaborative process of film making and why they live in Edmonton.
December 15– Northern Visions
Award winning filmmaker Lindsay McIntyre (’01 BA), the artist behind the large scale film installation for Stargazer cocktail event during Alumni Weekend 2011, showed her film where she stood in the first place. on Inuvik for our December film club.
The short film was followed by Before Tomorrow, also about the North. Department of English & Film Studies professor Liz Czach, who is a former Canadian programmer for the Toronto Film Festival, spoke about the two films. The audience enjoyed the opportunity to speak to the film-maker and expert; the highlight was Dr. Czach’s invitation for McIntyre to instruct film students on film making.
February 16, 2012- Black History Month
Mighty Jerome is a film based on the book Running Uphill by Fil Fraser ('08 Hon DLitt), an award-winning writer, film-maker and journalist. The film’s producer Selwyn Jacob (’70 Ed) travelled from Vancouver to speak about the film. Wendy Jerome (’58 Phys Ed), a dedicated and long-term alumni volunteer played a large part in providing information for this film including her story of being married to Olympic Gold medalist Harry Jerome; Wendy was on hand for the evenings Q & A.
March 16, 2012- Amazing Ecologies
Pierre Boulanger from the Department of Computing Science gave a fascinating, multi-media presentation on the science behind Avatar, which was the feature film for March. Science grad and filmmaker Jamie Pratt preimered Girls Gone Wild a quirky and fun documentary on the scientific and cultural importantance of Bison.
April 19, 2012-Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Trevor Rockwell screened a compilation of ads from the late 50’s and then UofA Women’s Studies professor Cristina Lucia Stasia ('00 Arts) gave an entertaining and in depth introduction for the delightful Breakfast at Tiffany's. We had a great crowd for this one. The evening was the perfect close to our 2011-2012 Educated Reel fiim club.
